Planning for 40,000 New Jobs: HR&A Helps Lead Central NY Housing Summit

Last month, we helped Empire State Development and New York State Department of State host a successful one-day housing summit in Syracuse, as part of our work on the Central New York Housing Study. This event brought together local and national experts on housing and economic development to discuss the housing opportunities and challenges associated with Micron Technology’s announcement of a $100 billion chip fabrication plant in suburban Syracuse. As this development is set to create over 40,000 permanent jobs in the Central New York region over the next two decades, it is critical to plan for its impact on Syracuse’s housing market to ensure that all can benefit from this growth.

The summit focused on understanding existing housing capacity in the region, addressing gaps, and brainstorming strategies to build and rehabilitate housing to meet projected market needs, informed by examples from around the country. We also explored ways to mitigate displacement pressures and leverage the uptick in housing demand to revitalize communities and support sustainable growth.

A special thank you to Highland Planning LLC, EDR (Environmental Design & Research), and everyone who traveled from across the region and country for their collaboration in making this event a success.
